Volunteers needed:
We have provided emergency shelter to homeless women and children for over 30 years. Our Victorian home in a historic district of downtown San Jose CA is within walking distance of San Jose State University and numerous cultural and educational amenities. The Jesuit Santa Clara University is four miles away. In joining our community as a live-in member you would have the opportunity to serve while growing in your own faith and understanding of the causes of injustice. Alongside the great wealth that has been created in this region has grown ever-increasing poverty. The need to provide a safe and welcoming shelter has never been greater. Casa de Clara members are able to work or attend school while fulfilling their commitment to the community. A contribution for room and board is expected according to ones means. Prior community living or volunteer work preferred, especially with homeless women. Commitment to non-violence and simple-living, open-mind & heart, and good sense of humor. Useful skills: cooking, gardening, home maintenance, outreach, & newsletter development. Committment to a six-month term. One-year terms are preferred because of the expanded opportunities it affords in developing and stabilizing the work and the community. (408) 297-8330 sanjosecatholicworker@yahoo.com.
